Abstract

This book is the fruition of work from contributors to the Art and Cartography: Cartography and Art symposium held in Vienna in February 2008. This meeting brought together cartographers who were interested in the design and aesthetics elements of cartography and artists who use maps as the basis for their art or who incorporate place and space in their expressions. The outcome of bringing together these like minds culminated in a wonderful event, spanning three evenings and two days in the Austrian capital. Papers, exhi- tions and installations provided a forum for appreciating the endeavors of artists and cartographers and their representations of geography. As well as indulging in an expansive and expressive occasion attendees were able to re? ect on their own work and discuss similar elements in each other's work. It also allowed cartographers and artists to discuss the potential for collaboration in future research and development. To recognise the signi? cance of this event, paper authors were invited to further develop their work and contribute chapters to this book. We believe that this book marks both a signi? cant occasion in Vienna and a starting point for future collabo- tive efforts between artists and cartographers. The editors would like to acknowledge the work of Manuela Schmidt and Felix Ortag, who undertook the task of the design and layout of the chapters.

Abstract

i know it isn't fair, but some time ago I came up with an all-purpose response to that question of questions that we are faced with so often that we've come to forget or overlook what we're really being asked. You know the one. It's usually raised when you're in a group, and someone in some sort of petty authority say a waiter or a tour guide or a stewardess is presiding. Tis person is talking to you all, explaining something the daily specials, how we'll all meet back here at the bus in forty-?ve minutes, that you can't use the bathroom while we're taxiing and at some point they ?nally stop. And then they ask it: Does anyone have any questions? Now, if I am part of this group and feeling especially put-upon by this person or otherwise disruptive, I will raise my hand. Yes? they will inevitably ask. And I will say it: Um, why does evil exist? And, wow, that really throws them for a loop. Um ¦ Like I said, it isn't fair. Fish in a barrel, really. But they asked, and I'm asking. Uh, what do you mean? Tey always say that, too.

Abstract

The authors present the state of the art in the rapidly growing field of visualization as related to problems in urban and regional planning. The significance and timeliness of this volume consist in its reflection of several developments in literature and the challenges cities are facing. First, the unsustainability of many of our current paradigms of development has become evidently clear. We are entering an era in which communities across the globe are strengthening their connections to the global flows of capital, goods, ideas, technologies and values while facing at the same time serious dislocations in their traditional socioeconomic structures. While the impending scenarios of climate change impacts remind us about the integrated ecological system that we are part of, the current discussions about global recession in the media alert us and make us aware of the occasional perils of the globalized economic system. The globally dispersed, intricately integrated and hyper-complex socioeconomic-ecological system is difficult to analyze, comprehend and communicate without effective visualization tools. Given that planners are at the frontlines in the effort to prepare as well as build resilience in the impacted communities, appropriate visualization tools are indispensable for effective planning. Second, planners have largely been slow to incorporate the advances in visualization research emerging from other domains of inquiry. Findings of research in other disciplines, such as graphic design, geography and cartography also lead to the development of new forms of visualization and communication.

Abstract

Boundary representation is the principle solid modelling method used in modern CAD/CAM systems. There have been a long series of developments on which currently available systems are based, full details of which are only partially known. Ian Stroud's thorough coverage of these developments puts this technology in perspective. It includes: ¢ data structures ¢ algorithms and other related techniques including non-manifold modelling ¢ product modelling ¢ graphics ¢ disc files and data exchange ¢ some applications related topics. A basic knowledge of the technique will make it easier to use kernel modelling packages for application developments. Ian Stroud started working with boundary representation solid modelling in 1977. Since then he has researched and is researching a wide variety of topics in and around this field. The information in the book comes from the results of this research.

Abstract

Every day we share encounters with others as we inhabit the space around us. In offering insights and knowledge on this increasingly important topic, this book introduces a range of empirical and theoretical approaches to the study of shared encounters. It highlights the multifaceted nature of collective experience and provides a deeper understanding of the nature and value of shared encounters in everyday life. Divided into four sections, each section comprises a set of chapters on a different topic and is introduced by a key author in the field who provides an overview of the content. The book itself is introduced by Paul Dourish, who sets the theme of shared encounters in the context of technological and social change over the last fifteen years. The four sections that follow consider the characteristics of shared encounters and describe how they can be supported in different settings: the first section, introduced by Barry Brown, looks at shared experiences. George Roussos, in the second section, presents playful encounters. Malcolm McCulloch introduces the section on spatial settings and - last but not least - Elizabeth Churchill previews the topic of social glue. The individual chapters that accompany each part offer particular perspectives on the main topic and provide detailed insights from the author's own research background. A valuable reference for anyone designing ubiquitous media, mobile social software and LBS applications, this volume will also be useful to researchers, students and practitioners in fields ranging from computer science to urban studies.
